WoW - That's Fan Art!

Well, this is my World of Warcraft-Fan Art.
I recently noticed that people in my guild really liked to be made into Fan Art; their characters doing kwool stufs, ya'know. And, well, I think the ones I made so far look pretty good.

And, err well, if you want, you could request something, and I should be able to do it those hours I don't machinimate.

So! Norviskrall's been added to the first post of my request thread!

As a bonus, I thought I'd show you the various phases of an image's creation. This one was extra tricky, and I do dare say this one was my biggest challenge so far. It took me almost 4 hours.

PART 1 - THE BACKGROUND, THE DECORATION AND THE LIGHTING

Norv suggested a room in Scholomance as the place where he would sit and study. I say it was lucky I'm not able to enter instances with my level 1 character on the private realm with WoW Machinima Tools, since I believe this far surpasses what I'd've made then. Anyhow, I settled with a room at the entrance to the Monastery, angling the camera to be certain not to get any of the giant banner depicting the cross of the Holy Light that is to the right, though not visible.

Image

Since it was requested of me that he'd be in a library, so the first thing I did was to add book shelves to the room. You can see that they took the place of the stone benches that stood there before. However, their feet make them look like they stand a bit away from the wall, but if I move them up, the stone benches will be seen...

Image

The solution: Cut away the feet! (Yes, I realise it wouldn't've been seen in the final picture, but I make it all up as I go, and I thought more would be seen under the table when I cut them away.)

Image

The next thing to do, since you also must've noticed that the colouration of the shelves looks a little out of place, is to dull them down to match the dullness of the room, and make it more red to fit the light that comes off the walls. You can clearly see how much a difference it makes.

Image

The next thing to do is to add shadows to the shelves. As I don't work in Photoshop, but in Adobe After Effects, which is primarily used to edit movies, I do things a little differently.

I copy each of the shelves, and put each of the new shelves on top of their twin, before I colour the upper shelf black. Remember, the regular shelves are still there, but covered by their "dark twins".

Image

Then I'll blur the black twin out, with a kind of "speed blur", called CC Radial Fast Blur. You set a point, and the picture with the blur-effect will blur away from that point. By setting the point at the candles, the shadow/blur will move away from the light, making the part near the light lighter, and the part further away darker, and also leaving shadows around it, which looks pretty realistic. The last touch is to reduce the opacity, since real shadows aren't coal-black, but transparent.

Image

Now, this method isn't perfect, and to add shadows on places where I don't have objects - since the background is just flat and doesn't protrude - you'll have to deal with that yourself.
Create a black dot, reduce its opacity, and then form it and add to where shadows are needed.

Image
Neat huh?

Then I add a thing called an Adjustment Layer. What it does, is that everything I do to it, it applies to the layers under it. So, I add a glow.

Image
Even neater!

That's it for the first part!

Part 2 - Norviskrall, the Table, the Book and the Quill

I now add the table. I've already fixed the colouration; I didn't want to bore you with what you already know.

Image

And then I "clone" it, blacken it, blur it, and add shadows where needed.

Image

Now we will jump one step back, you could call it, since Norv exists both behind and in front of the table at the same time. His elbows are lying on the table, so they will exist in front of it, along with his chest, but his stomach and legs exist behind it, since they are below the table. This Norv is composed of two different poses, one where he's holding a 2H weapon, albeit he doesn't in the picture, and one where he's sitting.

Image
They say you become what you eat. In this case: chicken legs.

Along with the table, it looks like this:

Image

Now, the book. That was a hard nut to crack, but it was actually the first one. I was checking out different poses in WoWModelViewer, and I saw that the normal "readyattack 2hander" looked like he was holding a book, and if you put a quill between his index finger and the middle finger, it'd look like he was writing.

Well, back to the book. When I had angled the book as I wanted, I cut out the part of the hand that'd be on top of the book, since one part of the hand is behind it, and the fingers are in front of it, and positioned it until it looked right.

Image
Image

As you can see the top of the fingers are missing. If you now back up to where you can see his hand, you'll see that's not an easy way to hold a book, so I had to cut off the fingers and position them all by hand, changing their thickness and cutting and slicing them down to size. You can see the difference if you compare them to their prevous angling.

Image

Now the feather quill. That one was easy on the other hand. I just took a feather from WMV, made it longer, and bent it with CC Bend It, which bent it a tad, so that it didn't cover his face.

Image

And as I've shown you, I cut out a twin from the hand, the part that was in reality covering the quill, since he can't hold it like that, and put it over the quill. And voilá!

Image
Apparently he can both read and write. Who would've expected that from an orc?

Next I add the final gadgets: A pile of books and a rolled together scroll.

Image

And now I add the shadows and the blur. Now it's starting to look very dramatic!

Image

The last touch! I add another Adjustment Layer, and add a new glow, but when I was skimming through different types of glows, I found something called "Silhouette Luma", which darkened everthing that wasn't light, which gave the light and dark parts a nice contrast, allthough it was so dark that I had to lighten the entire picture. The entire thing gave it a nice sepia tone, which I found fitting, allthough it reduced the bitrate quality of the colouration. But I went with it, since it looked nice anyhow. The last thing I did was to add a very little amount of blur to the entire picture, to smoothen rough edges and contribute to the sepia-feeling.

And I said: Let there be pictures.
And there was pictures.

I hope you enjoyed it!

May the winds of the north - so cold of heart and their purpose so ancient - carry your soul to the hidden trove of knowledge and realisation that they so guard.

You can make circles in After Effects. Create a new black solid and then select the circle mask tool. Hold ctrl while making the circle and it gets symmetrical. Then feather the mask and lower the opacity.

Arr, well, I haven't fully done my AE-homework, so I kind of cheat my way through and create things with tape and glue.
