No Point: Stretching Time - Tamzin's Review

I found the WoW Insider 'review' pure shameless non-constructive ass-lickery, so in my tradition of brutally honest reviewing hehe, I am writing this...

REVIEW:
I've been waiting for this movie for a long time, I thought it might never come, and when it did I almost missed it because I don't check the WCM site often. By waiting I mean I have always suspected that Baron Soosdon's master piece was yet to pop out of his head, but with this movie, in the absence of something new and better ofc, well, he has made his master piece imo!

We have had a lot of movies from the Baron recently which if one were being kind, one would describe as very self-indulgent, that is not a criticism though by any means. And if one were being sceptical, I would describe them as pampering to the fan boys, and that is a criticism. So I had all but lost hope of him making a movie such as this one again. One in which he fore fills his potential to make a truly stand alone piece of machinima art of the highest calibre! And not just another endless 'person walking no where in HD to trance music' movie.

In a way the true test of whether or not a machinima is good or not, is if you hit the forward skip button. And I have to admit my finger was getting itchy mid-way through this movie, but the ending was so spectacular I'm glad I kept watching. I think if I had never seen a Baron movie before, I wouldn't wanna skip through it trying to find the highlights, but because we've seen the whole walking no one in HD thing so many times, unless you have a fetish for it (as he must have), it's hard not to skip past it and try to find the 'action' parts.

Anyway, on a technical level this movie is faultless, with the tiny exception of some minor 'rushed' or lazy feeling parts to the camera shakes/zooms. And the cleverness of the whole aesthetic is spectacular. This of course is something which would be completely lost on a non-WoW player, because they wouldn't know, understand, or care, that something they were looking at was a model edit or not. But it is a testament to the balance and pace of the movie that you don't have to know something is a model edit, to appreciate it and not find it boring to look at.

The music too is wonderful, though if you do not like that kind of music then you are likely to complain about this, you only need to see any comments on this movie to see that fact. But again it is a testament to the Baron's artistic integrity that he doesn't pander to the fans, and he continues to only use music he wants to use.

There is no story line as such in this movie, but the movie is wonderfully ambiguous in this respect, and open to one's own interpretation, this gives it a very magical feel and is quintessentially what the Baron's je ne sais quoi is all about. Indeed, it is precisely the Baron's ability to fuse technical hackery, in a wonderfully artistic and beautiful way, with the 'cool' cyber punky game retro'esque elements he loves so much, all tempered with exquisitely vague possible story line hints, that at his best does indeed mark Baron Soosdon's movies unique among machinima! This is him at his best, whereas at his default setting his 'style' is market purely by his movie coloration filtering, music, endless 'steadycam' camera shake effect and walking no where'ness.

I salute and thank you Baron for making this wonderful movie! You should end it all right now, so you end on a high note and don't produce second rate kack now to soil your legacy with ;)

Whowho...

I hope you see this, it's a miracle actually I saw your reply to my post because I don't read these forums I just came to re-download the movie to show a mate and I happened to click my review JUST in case and so I'm glad I did :)

I agree with what you say about the walking in HD thing, but I want to add my thoughts on it too, this is how I feel about it: Basically, you are completely right, a Baron movie is dripping in 'esque and retro and reference, it basically is what the movie is all about, it's like a distillation of essences from gaming pop culture of a certain ilk and age and era. BUT, the key element which makes the walking in HD boring or not boring, in my option, is this:

Is there SOME kind of destination? So we feel a kind of resolve, not even in a story sense but is it literally pure random (which is kinda ok when it's obviously 'exploring'), or will they end up some place and the next scene will be in that place. So if even for no other reason when we next see a walking no where in HD scene will we want to keep watching because we expect to be shown a final destination scene like we were last time, or, we think there will not be one coz they wasn't last time, so we skip forward. Note how in movies, lord of rings et al that is how editing works, and one criticism I would lay on Baron is he doesn't study the actual discipline of editing enough. If he did he would eradicate two errors he makes CONSISTENTLY throughout all his movies, they are:

1 - He doesn't give the viewer that resolve feeling, he often just has pure random elements one after the other, that is very boring especially when he's done it 20 movies in a row.

2 - He uses 'editing gimmicks' a lot, needlessly. Every editing gimmick has to have a logic behind it, for example camera shake is his worst offending one, also camera zooming. So for example you have to think and apply the logic when you edit of 'would the camera shake here?' ie are they in a car, is there an explosion, is it steady-cam etc. If you literally just make it shake 24/7, is makes the shake pointless and feels very samey and dated and gimmicky, it breaks the suspension of disbelief (that's the worst thing about it) in the vibe of the movie. Same goes with the zooms, endlessly repeating the same zooming type shots the same way, needlessly, instead of perhaps some nice fly-by shots or something instead. I personally think it's laziness (a side effect of having fans and 5 ratings no matter what shit you spit out so you never push yourself) not skills which prevents him doing that. ie he has the skill but he doesn't have enough constructive criticism of his movies, he just has fan boys so he doesn't get pushed to 'evolve' as much as he would if he had constructive criticism. He has the potential to be one of the greats of this new punk era of movie making, if only he would make himself immune to the fan boys.

Just to be clear, now that I've said all that; I can't edit worth a SHIT so I have no right to critic his work hehe but I'm doing it anyway so there! :-P

Whowho, you could also try posting at Myndflame's machinima portal site. I think they have quite good visibility there, go check it out - http://myndflame.gameriot.com

And of course, what's not to stop you for applying to WoW Insider!
